Many cutlery pieces and kitchen knives bear an imprint like 18/10, 18/0, or 13/0. But what does this mysterious number code actually mean? We’re happy to explain it to you!

The marking on your cutlery provides information about the composition of the stainless steel it is made from.

18/10 Steel

The designation 18/10 stands for chromium-nickel steel. The 18 means 18% chromium, and the 10 stands for 10% nickel. The composition of this steel must comply with EU regulations, so the percentage values are precisely defined.

Chromium-nickel steel is especially durable and highly corrosion-resistant. It also usually has an even stronger shine than 18/0 cutlery.

Cutlery made from 18/10 stainless steel is dishwasher safe.

Popular Amefa models made from 18/10 steel include Moderno and Drift.

18/0 Steel

The 18/0 marking means 18% chromium and no nickel content. Products made from this material are corrosion-resistant and of good quality.

Cutlery made from 18/0 steel is also dishwasher safe. However, we recommend drying it immediately after the wash cycle with a soft cloth.

Popular Amefa models made from 18/0 steel include Austin and Felicity.

13/0 Steel

The 13/0 steel type is mainly used for kitchen, table, and steak knives. It contains 13% chromium and no nickel. This makes the steel harder to forge, which makes sharpening easier and allows for especially sharp blades.

The advantage of this steel: it stays sharp longer.

We advise against cleaning kitchen and steak knives in the dishwasher. Hand washing is better. This prevents the blade from becoming dull and extends the knife’s lifespan.
